Bhubaneswar (30 December 2023): The National Pediatric Surgery Day was observed on December 29 at the Institute of Medical Sciences and SUM Hospital. On this occasion, a special program was organized by the Pediatric Surgery Department of the hospital, where experts and doctors emphasized the importance of awareness about various pediatric surgical conditions.
Every child deserves proper care and treatment. Some children are born with congenital defects, while others develop issues later in life. Problems such as breathing difficulties, cough, kidney, stomach, and heart-related issues, hernias, and skin conditions can be observed in children. Specialists highlighted the need for pediatric surgeons in every district of the country to provide proper treatment and surgeries for these conditions.
Modern pediatric surgery can address various complex conditions in newborns to 18-year-olds, including urinary, gastrointestinal, chest, neurosurgical issues, and congenital defects. Pediatric surgeons utilize advanced techniques such as keyhole, endoscopic, laparoscopic, and robotic surgeries to ensure safe operations for children. The head of the Pediatric Surgery Department, Professor (Dr.) Antaryami Pradhan, mentioned that high-quality health services are provided at IMS and SUM Hospital through minimally invasive surgery, pediatric anesthesia, and high-level intensive care.
In India, more than 3000 children are born daily with congenital defects, and the lack of adequate pediatric surgical facilities and ICUs in rural areas is contributing to higher infant mortality rates. With proper treatment and surgeries, these mortality rates can be reduced. In 2022, India's infant mortality rate was 27.69 per 1000 births, down from 28.77 in 2021.
IMS and SUM Hospital provide international-level health services in pediatric care. Advanced treatments and surgeries for issues like laparoscopic surgery, abdominal surgery, heart surgery, and congenital defects in newborns are available at the Pediatric Surgery Department of the hospital.
All pediatric surgical issues are treated under the Biju Swasthya Kalyan Yojana (BSKY) at the hospital.
The event was graced by the presence of IMS and SUM Hospital Dean, Professor (Dr.) Sanghamitra Mishra, along with Pediatric Surgery Professors Hiranya Kumar Mahanti, Sudhanshu S. Patra, Associate Professor Dr. Lalit Panda, Dr. Bikram Behera, Dr. Santosh Subudhi, and Professors of Pediatrics Arakshita Swain, Saroj Satapathy, Ratan Kumar Das, Dr. Priyanka Panda, and Dr. Punyaprabha Mahanti.
