Bureau (28 February 2026): Afghanistan’s Interior Minister Sirajuddin Haqqani has reportedly threatened to carry out suicide attacks inside Pakistan, signaling a dangerous escalation in the ongoing tensions between the two neighboring countries.
Referring to the Taliban’s past insurgency against NATO forces, Haqqani warned that if the Taliban were to engage in direct confrontation with Pakistan, the country’s map could change “within a day.” His remarks have heightened fears that the conflict between Pakistan and Afghanistan could take a far more violent turn.
Reference to Taliban’s Past Tactics
During the U.S.-led war in Afghanistan, the Taliban frequently carried out suicide bombings and guerrilla warfare operations against American and allied forces. Afghanistan witnessed daily explosions during that period. On the final days of the U.S. troop withdrawal, a devastating blast in Kabul killed more than 150 people.
Haqqani is reportedly suggesting that similar tactics could be used against Pakistan if tensions continue to rise.
Background of the Haqqani Network
The Haqqani Network, closely associated with the Taliban, played a significant role in the two-decade-long insurgency against U.S. and NATO forces in Afghanistan. Despite billions of dollars spent by the United States, Washington eventually withdrew its troops after nearly 20 years of war.
Haqqani’s latest warning comes at a time when relations between Kabul and Islamabad remain strained, raising concerns among regional observers about the possibility of further destabilization in South Asia.
