Bureau (28 February 2026): The ongoing tensions along the Pakistan-Afghanistan border have intensified into a violent and bloody conflict, raising fears of a full-scale war between the two neighbouring nations. The escalating hostilities have caused significant destruction and heightened concerns over regional stability.
In response to the deteriorating situation, major powers including Russia, China, and Iran have urged both countries to immediately cease hostilities and return to the negotiating table. Russia has also offered to mediate between Islamabad and Kabul to help resolve the dispute through diplomatic means.
The Russian Foreign Ministry stated that the only viable solution to the crisis is to halt military operations and seek a diplomatic resolution. It warned that continued violence could further destabilize the already fragile region.
Airstrikes and Drone Attacks Intensify Conflict
According to reports, the Pakistan Air Force launched a major airstrike operation named “Operation Ghazab Lil Haq”, targeting Kabul and other key provinces in Afghanistan. In retaliation, Afghan forces carried out heavy drone strikes on Pakistani positions near the Torkham border and released videos claiming successful hits.
Over the past several hours, Pakistani forces have reportedly continued bombing Taliban-linked positions, while the Taliban has claimed to have captured multiple Pakistani military posts and inflicted significant losses. Pakistan has formally declared an open military confrontation, further escalating tensions.
The conflict reportedly began on February 21, but it has now evolved into what observers describe as a potential full-scale war. Civilians living along the border areas are facing grave risks amid the cross-border attacks.
Call for Diplomatic Solution
The Russian Foreign Ministry appealed to both sides to abandon hostilities and restore peace through dialogue, stating that only diplomacy can prevent further bloodshed. China and Iran echoed Russia’s call, supporting efforts to de-escalate the crisis and restore stability in the region.
As fighting continues, the international community is closely monitoring the situation, urging restraint to prevent the conflict from spiraling into a wider regional war.
