Bureau, 28 February 2026: The skies over Jaisalmer thundered as the Indian Air Force (IAF) successfully conducted ‘Exercise Vayu Shakti-26’ at the Pokhran Field Firing Range in Rajasthan, showcasing its aerial dominance and combat preparedness in a grand display of firepower.
President Droupadi Murmu attended the exercise as the Chief Guest and witnessed the impressive demonstration of the Air Force’s operational capabilities. According to the Ministry of Defence, several dignitaries were present, including Rajasthan Governor Haribhau Kisanrao Bagde, Defence Minister Rajnath Singh, Civil Aviation Minister Kinjarapu Ram Mohan Naidu, and Chief of Defence Staff General Anil Chauhan. Foreign defence officials and school students also attended the event.
A Glimpse of ‘Atmanirbhar Bharat’
Before the commencement of the exercise, President Murmu flew in the indigenously developed Light Combat Helicopter (LCH) ‘Prachand’, highlighting India’s growing self-reliance in the defence sector under the ‘Atmanirbhar Bharat’ initiative.
Over 130 Aircraft Participate
The day-and-night exercise featured more than 130 aircraft, including Rafale, Su-30 MKI, Mirage-2000, MiG-29, C-17 Globemaster, and Light Combat Helicopters. The powerful sonic boom created by the Rafale jets reverberated across the range, underlining the Air Force’s striking capability.
The IAF platforms, along with missile systems such as Akash and SPYDER, precisely destroyed simulated enemy targets. During the night phase, the Air Force demonstrated its ability to conduct accurate strikes even in complete darkness, reflecting advanced operational readiness.
Special Missions and Drone Display
Apart from aerial strikes, the exercise showcased special operations, including hostage rescue and urban intervention missions carried out by the Garud Special Forces and Para SF units. The event concluded with a spectacular drone display and a fly-past by the C-17 aircraft.
Conducted under the motto “Accurate, Invincible and Precise,” Exercise Vayu Shakti-26 reaffirmed that the Indian Air Force remains fully prepared to face any challenge and safeguard the nation’s security under all circumstances.
