Violent Protests Erupt in Pakistan After Death of Ayatollah Khamenei

Desk (1 March 2026): Widespread unrest has broken out across Pakistan following the reported death of Iran’s Supreme Leader Ali Khamenei. Protesters have taken to the streets in several cities, staging intense anti-American demonstrations that have turned violent in some areas.

Major clashes were reported outside the U.S. consulates in Karachi and Lahore, where large crowds gathered to protest. In Shia-majority regions of Pakistan, incidents of arson and vandalism were reported as tensions escalated.

In the northern region of Gilgit-Baltistan, protesters reportedly set fire to parts of a United Nations office in Skardu and damaged nearby buildings. The UN facility sustained partial fire damage during the unrest.

Earlier, demonstrators in Karachi allegedly carried out arson attacks near the U.S. diplomatic mission. Reports indicate that at least 12 Pakistani citizens were killed and around 60 others injured in firing by American security personnel during the violent confrontation. Authorities have not yet issued a detailed official statement on the incident.

Anti-American protests have also intensified in Lahore, Peshawar, and other major cities. In response to the deteriorating security situation, the U.S. Embassy in Islamabad has issued an advisory urging American citizens to avoid crowded places and remain vigilant.

Security forces have been deployed in sensitive areas to restore order, while the Pakistani government is closely monitoring the situation amid fears of further escalation.
