Veteran contributor created over 3,500 articles and received the WikiMed 'Cure Award' for eight consecutive years
Bhubaneswar (14 March 2025): The Odia Wikimedia community is mourning the loss of one of its most dedicated and beloved contributors. Dr. Subas Chandra Rout, a tireless champion of knowledge in the Odia language, passed away on 10 March following a brief illness at his home. His passing leaves a profound void in the community he served with unwavering commitment for over a decade.
Dr. Rout began his journey as a Wikipedia contributor at the age of 68 — a testament to his lifelong passion for learning and sharing knowledge. Over the course of 14 active years, he made an extraordinary impact on Odia Wikipedia, creating more than 3,500 articles, of which over 2,500 focused on medical topics. His contributions gave Odia-speaking readers access to reliable health and medical information in their mother tongue — a resource that remains invaluable to this day.

Beyond his prolific writing, Dr. Rout was an active participant in several Wikimedia movement initiatives, most notably WikiMed — a global project aimed at improving the quality and reach of medical knowledge on Wikipedia. He stood out as one of the leading contributors to WikiMed in all of South Asia, bringing recognition not only to himself but to the entire Odia community.
His dedication to Wiki Project Med earned him "The Cure Award" from the WikiMed Foundation — one of the most prestigious recognitions given to top medical contributors worldwide. Remarkably, Dr. Rout received this honour for eight consecutive years, a record that speaks volumes about his sustained excellence and commitment to the cause of accessible medical knowledge.
