Odia Wikimedians Celebrate Wikidata’s 14th Anniversary at IFI Foundation, Exploring Future Digital Collaborations

Bhubaneswar (29 Oct’ 2026): The Odia Wikimedians User Group celebrated the 14th anniversary of Wikidata at the office of the IFI Foundation in Bhubaneswar. The gathering brought together open-knowledge advocates, digital archivists, and media professionals to commemorate the growth of Wikimedia’s central structured data repository while discussing cross-domain collaborations to document Odisha’s cultural and healthcare landscape.

A Decade and More of Structured Open Knowledge

Launched on October 29, 2012, by the Wikimedia Foundation and Wikimedia Deutschland, Wikidata operates as a free, collaborative, multilingual, secondary knowledge base. Unlike Wikipedia, which primarily consists of unstructured prose, Wikidata stores information in machine-readable, structured formats using item identifiers (Q-IDs) and property claims (P-IDs). By serving as the centralized backbone for facts, dates, coordinates, and interlanguage links across all Wikimedia projects – including Odia Wikipedia – Wikidata bridges digital divides and empowers global technologies, search engines, and artificial intelligence systems to query information seamlessly in regional languages.

The Gathering: Community and Media Synergy

Representing the Odia Wikimedians User Group at the event were key community drivers:

  • Sangram Keshari Senapati: An active community organizer, administrator, and author who coordinates regional documentation drives, digital archiving, and edit-a-thons across Odisha.
  • Chinmayee Mishra: A seasoned Wikimedian and open-knowledge contributor focused on cultural archiving, content creation, and community outreach.
  • Jnanaranjan Sahu: A software developer, photographer, and longtime administrator across Odia Wikimedia projects who builds language input tools, Unicode converters, and scripts supporting Indic languages.

They were joined by Nilambar Rath, founder and editor-in-chief of digital media platforms OdishaLIVE and Odishaplus, alongside team members from Swasthya Plus, a dedicated health-communication initiative managed by the IFI Foundation. Several staff members at Swasthya Plus are already active Wikipedia contributors, while others regularly reference verified Wikimedia articles to ground their research and public health communication.

Charting New Frontiers in Health, Heritage, and Folklore

During the anniversary meetup, the user group held formal discussions with Nilambar Rath regarding prospective joint initiatives. The dialogue focused on three main focus areas:

  1. Public Health Literacy: Translating and expanding accurate medical, wellness, and preventive care knowledge on Odia Wikipedia and Wikidata in tandem with insights from Swasthya Plus.
  2. Heritage & Folklore Preservation: Digitizing, archiving, and categorizing indigenous folk narratives, traditional art forms, and historical monuments into structured open-access repositories.
  3. Structured Open Data Integration: Utilizing Wikidata to systematically map regional health infrastructure, historical landmarks, and cultural practitioners across Odisha, ensuring local heritage remains discoverable in the semantic web.

The event closed with a mutual commitment to expand open-access knowledge in the Odia language, setting the stage for institutional partnerships that preserve local heritage while addressing critical modern information needs.
