Mayurbhanj (15 March 2026): A powerful storm accompanied by a Kalbaisakhi squall struck the Karanjia area of Mayurbhanj district, causing widespread damage and loss of life in the Bamanghati sub-division.
According to reports, two people lost their lives while more than ten others were injured due to the intense storm. The sudden squall brought strong winds that damaged several houses and disrupted normal life in the region.
Officials said that the roofs of more than 100 houses were blown away, while over ten electric poles were uprooted, leading to power disruptions in several villages. The powerful winds were so intense that an auto-rickshaw was reportedly lifted and thrown nearly 50 feet from its original position.
The storm also created unusual conditions in the area, as a large portion of water from a nearby pond suddenly dried up during the violent weather event, further alarming residents.
Local authorities and emergency teams have begun assessing the damage and providing assistance to affected families. Injured persons have been shifted to nearby health centres for treatment, while restoration of electricity and other services is underway.
